Tucked into the historic landscape of Vizcaya Village is a thriving hub of activity that’s reshaping how Miami connects with food, nature, and community. Vizcaya’s Urban Agriculture Volunteer Program is more than a Saturday morning activity—it’s a hands-on learning experience built around sustainability, heritage, and the joy of growing something meaningful.
Whether you’re new to gardening or already have dirt under your nails, this program offers a welcoming, educational, and rewarding way to spend your time.
A Saturday Morning with Purpose
Every Saturday from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m., a dedicated group of volunteers gathers at Vizcaya Village to support the museum’s expanding agriculture initiatives. Meeting at the historic Paint Shop, volunteers receive a morning overview led by horticulture and urban agriculture staff before diving into the day’s work.
The tasks change week to week, but activities often include:
- Seed sowing and transplanting
- Weeding and mulching
- Compost maintenance
- Fertilizing and bed preparation
- Harvesting produce used in community programs
This hands-on experience offers a rare chance to work directly with professionals who manage Vizcaya’s agricultural spaces—people eager to teach and share their expertise.
Why Volunteers Join
Participants come from all parts of Miami and beyond, each with different reasons for joining:
1. To Learn How to Grow Food
Many volunteers are new gardeners eager to start growing fruits, vegetables, or herbs at home. The program provides a step-by-step introduction to soil health, plant care, seasonal growing, and sustainable practices tailored to South Florida’s climate.
2. To Build Community
Saturday mornings at Vizcaya Village naturally create connection. Volunteers work in teams, share stories, and enjoy the simple reward of collaborating toward something tangible. It’s a low-pressure, welcoming social space for anyone looking to meet new people.
3. To Support Vizcaya’s Mission
The program contributes directly to Vizcaya’s public mission—expanding environmental education, cultivating community spaces, and deepening the connection between people and the historic agricultural roots of the estate.
Special Opportunities and Perks
Volunteers also enjoy experiences beyond the garden beds. One favorite perk: a group field trip to Homestead, where volunteers tour a working farm, meet local growers, and see firsthand how Miami-Dade agriculture operates at scale.
When harvest yields allow, volunteers may also take home small amounts of produce not designated for programs—a delicious bonus.
What Commitment Looks Like
The program asks participants to volunteer two Saturdays per month. Each week, a small group of 4–6 people works alongside Vizcaya’s team, keeping the experience hands-on and personal. Time may shift seasonally—currently 8 a.m.–11 a.m., tentatively adjusting to 9 a.m.–12 p.m. in the cooler months.
No prior gardening experience is needed. All training is provided on-site.
