Vizcaya is an inclusive, open, and welcoming place and it is our goal to ensure everyone we work with or encounter feels welcomed and able to express their full selves while they are here. But what does this have to do with pronouns and grammar?
People often refer to each other using pronouns, and when speaking of someone in the third person, pronouns customarily have a gender implied or stated: “he” to refer to a man/boy or “she” to refer to a woman/girl. People make assumptions about another person’s gender, but their assumptions may not be correct, and this can send a potentially harmful message to people who are gender non-conforming.
Transgendered, gender non-conforming, and gender fluid people often use pronouns that express their gender identity. Using someone’s preferred personal pronouns is a way to show respect for the person and the way they self-identify, and helps create an inclusive environment.
