Following the tragic death of George Floyd, Vizcaya officials shared an unwavering message of support for the Black community on social media on Monday, June 1, 2020. The letter from Vizcaya’s Executive Director and CEO affirmed the museum’s commitment to equality and can be read below.
Vizcaya also participated in #BlackOutTuesday by not posting to social media for the day as staff continued to listen and discuss ways in which we can continue to promote change within our organization and our community.
As Dr. Hoffman’s letter states, “Our work to ensure that Vizcaya represents and serves our entire community is far from done.”

Dear friends,
Recognizing history’s impact on shaping the present and the future, we condemn racism and injustice, we mourn the death of George Floyd, and we honor and stand with those who value, protect and champion the causes of equity and inclusion in our community and beyond.
Over the past century, Vizcaya has evolved dramatically—from a home for one man to a cultural resource for all. Our work to ensure that Vizcaya represents and serves our entire community is far from done.
