Do you know what all these trees have in common? They are all heritage trees! 🌳

As part of our sustainability commitment at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, we honor and care for our trees as cherished members of our family. That’s because many of these trees have stood on this land for over a century, long before Vizcaya was founded!

These trees have survived not only the threat of being removed for timber, development, or agriculture but also devastating hurricanes like Andrew in 1992.

Besides being survivors and integral to Vizcaya's history, our Senior Director of Horticulture and Sustainability, Ian Simpkins, explained that old trees sequester significantly more carbon than younger trees. Therefore, our heritage trees not only enhance the beauty of our gardens but also store substantial amounts of carbon in their roots, trunks, and leaves.

¿Sabes qué tienen en común todos estos árboles? ¡Todos son árboles patrimoniales! 🌳

Como parte de nuestro compromiso con la sostenibilidad en el Museo y Jardines de Vizcaya, honramos y cuidamos nuestros árboles como miembros preciados de nuestra familia. Esto se debe a que muchos de estos árboles han estado en esta tierra por más de un siglo, ¡mucho antes de que Vizcaya fuera fundada!

Estos árboles no solo han sobrevivido la amenaza de ser removidos para madera, desarrollo o agricultura, sino también huracanes devastadores.

Además de ser sobrevivientes e integrantes esenciales de la historia de Vizcaya, nuestro Director Senior de Horticultura y Sostenibilidad, Ian Simpkins, explicó que los árboles viejos secuestran significativamente más carbono que los árboles jóvenes. Por lo tanto, nuestros árboles patrimoniales no solo realzan la belleza de nuestros jardines, sino que también almacenan cantidades sustanciales de carbono en sus raíces, troncos y hojas.
