John Singer Sargent y los hermanos Deering

El destacado artista estadounidense John Singer Sargent vino a Miami en 1917 para visitar a su viejo amigo Charles Deering, hermanastro de James Deering. Durante este tiempo, Sargent también fue huésped en Vizcaya y creó un retrato en acuarela de James.

Influido por los artistas impresionistas franceses, Sargent comenzó a pintar "en plein air", o al aire libre. En Vizcaya, Sargent realizó acuarelas que captaban vistas de la finca junto con momentos excepcionales y una visión del personal en su tiempo libre, lo que proporciona un registro único de la vida en Vizcaya. Varias de estas obras forman parte de la colección del Instituto de Arte de Chicago.

"... para ser apreciado a través de las generaciones..."

En sus memorias, Big Bosses: A Working Girl's Memoir of Jazz Age America, Althea McDowell Altemus, secretaria privada de Deering, recuerda: "Durante mucho tiempo Sargent trabajó en este retrato y su intención era que se conservara durante generaciones". Altemus recuerda que el retrato estaba destinado a la puerta del dormitorio de la Espagnolette que da al balcón de Deering, y de ahí a su dormitorio y sala de estar privada.

Una vez terminado, Deering preguntó: "Bueno, ¿qué te parece?". Altemus fue franco en su respuesta: "No me gusta: pareces demasiado severo". Dice que nunca volvió a ver el retrato.

Phineas E. Paist, who worked with Vizcaya’s Artistic Director Paul Chalfin, captured Sargent as he painted Deering in the East Loggia.
