Proteger los tesoros de Vizcaya

Cuando camine por la Casa Principal de Vizcaya, observará que muchas de las habitaciones cuentan con puntales o barricadas que limitan el paso y el alcance de los visitantes. También verá carteles en los que se pide a los visitantes que no toquen los objetos ni se sienten en los muebles históricos. ¿Por qué no se puede entrar?

Al igual que las de otros museos, estas precauciones se aplican tanto para la protección de la colección como para la seguridad de los visitantes.

Espacios decorados por dentro

Vizcaya denomina habitaciones o espacios decorados a las estancias que presentan objetos de colección, mobiliario o adornos delicados. Se diferencian de zonas como el Patio y la Logia Este, donde los visitantes pueden pasear libremente.

Aunque hacemos todo lo posible por ofrecer a los visitantes el mayor acceso posible a los espacios decorados, se ponen límites mediante barreras para proteger los objetos de la colección, que a menudo tienen más de 100 años.

Aunque Vizcaya se construyó en 1916, muchos de sus objetos decorativos ya eran antigüedades cuando llegaron al lugar. Algunos ejemplos notables son la Alfombra Almirante del Salón (c. 1450) y los murales de la Sala de Música, que también son del siglo XV.

Cuando el personal de Vizcaya encargado del cuidado de las colecciones entra en estos espacios, lleva escarpines protectores para evitar dañar las alfombras. El personal también conoce muy bien el estado de los elementos estructurales de cada sala -puertas, paneles de pared, murales del techo, etc.- y cómo pueden gestionarse. - y el modo de tratarlos.

Por ejemplo, la puerta oculta integrada en la estantería de la Biblioteca de James Deering permanece abierta en todo momento para que los visitantes puedan acceder a la Sala de Recepción contigua. Dado que los más de 100 años de abrir y cerrar esta puerta provocan un desgaste natural, esta puerta está permanentemente abierta para evitar posibles daños.
