To understand Vizcaya, you first need to understand the man who imagined it.
James Deering lived a life shaped by travel, comfort, and curiosity. Before imagining Vizcaya, he moved between Chicago, New York, and Paris, hosting visitors and building cultural connections wherever he went. His health challenges eventually brought him to South Florida, where the warm climate and calm landscape inspired him to create a winter home of his own. That dream became Vizcaya; a place where he hoped to rest, enjoy nature, and surround himself with beauty.
Meet James Deering
A Citizen of Many Cities
James owned homes in Chicago, Evanston, New York, and just outside Paris. He was known for hosting guests and moving easily through different cultural circles.
Honored by France
In 1906, France awarded him the Legion of Honor, recognizing his cultural diplomacy and international connections.
Drawn to Florida
James Deering first came to Florida because of his father’s declining health. The light, warm weather, and waterfront landscape inspired him deeply.
Shaped by Italian Villas
James chose an Italian villa style for Vizcaya. Its design was inspired by 18th‑century villas from northern Italy, including Villa Rezzonico, adapted to Miami’s warm, subtropical landscape.
The Birth of Vizcaya
James Deering began planning a winter home on Biscayne Bay. Vizcaya grew into a personal project where he hoped to find rest and beauty.
A Lover of Books
James personally curated Vizcaya’s books. In 1916, he bought 299 books for the estate and arranged them so guests could easily browse and enjoy them.
Living His Dream, Briefly
James’s health declined even before Vizcaya was finished.
Still, he spent several winters enjoying the gardens and quiet spaces he had imagined.
