Business Relationships: Trust But Verify

James Deering valued boundaries and integrity in his business dealings. The concept of competency in workmanship is broached frequently in frank exchanges with Paul Chalfin. These letters are among the most frank. Is Deering being fair in his reactions?

“HE DOES NOT KNOW THAT I SEND YOU THIS…”

A letter from a man.

Letter: March 13th, 1916
From: James Deering, Vizcaya’s Owner
To: Paul Chalfin, Vizcaya’s Artistic Director

Dear Mr. Chalfin;- On Saturday afternoon Mr. Hoffman submitted to me a letter of which I gve [sic.] you a copy. I asked him why he submitted it to me and he said he wished to have a record of it. I do not feel that he has a right to bring me into letters or records that he chooses to keep for the purpose of his own office. Consequently I have written him the letter of which I enclose you a copy. If he wants to involve me in what he designates as his records, he must address me directly for that purpose.

Yours truly, [signed] JD Paul Chalfin, Esq. 3

“IT IS OUR DUTY TO FIND OUT THE TRUTH”

A letter written in red ink on an old piece of paper.

Letter: March 30th, 1916
From: James Deering, Vizcaya’s Owner
To: Paul Chalfin, Vizcaya’s Artistic Director

Dear Mr Chalfin;-

I enclose copy of letter to Mr. Hoffman about the leaks in the swimming pool. This has become almost intolerable and I strongly suspect that somebody is incompetent. It is our duty to find out the truth.

Yours truly, [signed] JD Paul Chalfin, Esq.
