Vizcaya’s Swimming Pool is on the north side of the house. It includes a whimsical and fragile grotto that guests experienced as they entered the pool and swam. The grotto features a plaster ceiling with underwater scenes by artist Robert Winthrop Chanler.
The Swimming Pool Grotto is subject to high relative humidity, salty air, and periodic storm surges during hurricanes. These conditions compromise the metal, concrete, limestone, shells, plaster and paint that were used to create the grotto.
