Teacher workshops at Vizcaya are designed to fulfill requirements of the Florida state educational standards, and enhance the learning experience for students. 

Workshop Options

Urban Farming at Vizcaya

Saturday, September 7, 2019 (closed)

Eight-hour workshop to encourage 4th and 5th grade educators to include farming, agriculture, nutrition and healthy choices in their classroom curriculum. The workshop will focus on: agricultural history, urban farming and its relevance today, engaging students in outdoor settings, curricular activities based on urban farming and food production, best practices for planting and harvesting (hands-on), and edible plant dissection. The workshop will take place in the Vizcaya Village.

Teacher Workshop Fee: $20 credit card only (no cash or checks). Includes breakfast, lunch and all materials. To register visit My Learning Plan. Review the standards met through this workshop and Urban Farming School Program. Workshop participants will receive a free bus and free admission to return to Vizcaya with up to 35 students for the Urban Farming School Program. Visits take place on Wednesdays and must be completed by June 4, 2020.

Art in Design

Wednesday, October 9th, 2019

Eight-hour workshop to support 3rd to 12th grade educators in understanding the intersections between art and design from a STEAM perspective. Educators will obtain knowledge and tools to discuss the artistic method, design, function and purpose in the classroom.

The workshop will cover: Vizcaya’s history, art and design definitions, function and purpose analysis, and design creation and execution. The topics will be approached from a STEAM perspective in which teachers will apply knowledge and skills to various fields and subject matters. The workshop will include taking measurements of various objects, drawing and rendering of designs with attention to measurements and dimensions, and the creation of 3D models with various materials. The workshop will take place throughout Vizcaya’s Main House, gardens and Village.

On Saturday, December 14, 2019 and Saturday, March 21, 2020 Vizcaya will open its doors to educators, principals and administrators from public and private schools in Miami-Dade County (along with up to 3 family members!) for free guided tours and hands-on activities. Light refreshments will be provided. Registration is limited

The Educator Appreciation Days are a perfect opportunity to explore learning experiences for your students and to learn about community programs for adults, families and visitors of all ages that take place throughout the year at Vizcaya. Community programs activate the estate through participatory, immersive experiences that inspire participants to connect with the past, understand the present and shape the future. Celebrate Biscayne Bay and win a free field trip for your class.

Vizcaya is a proud partner and supporter of Miami-Dade County’s annual Baynanza, Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day. Vizcaya and the County’s Department of Economic and Regulatory Resources host a design contest to encourage students in Miami-Dade to celebrate Biscayne Bay and understand its significance as one of the most important ecosystems in South Florida. Participate with your class and you could win a free field trip to Vizcaya!*

All Miami-Dade County elementary, middle and high school students are eligible to participate in the design contest for Baynanza 2020. Students create and enter a drawing that portrays Biscayne Bay and its unique natural environment. To see the results of the 2019 year, visit our story about the Baynanza winners.

*Class of winning student (first place) will get a field trip to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens with free admission and transportation for the current school year!

Helping students access history

Vizcaya is pleased to offer a limited number of bus transportation scholarships to Title-I schools in Miami-Dade County. Funds may be used for guided tours of the Main House and gardens by 3rd- through 12th-grade students in Title I schools.

Scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and subject to guided tour and bus availability.

Applications must be received a minimum of four weeks in advance of requested visit date. All visits must take place by June 4, 2020.
