Oldine Monestime (00:00):
Hello everyone and welcome to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. My name is Oldine, and I am standing here in the serving pantry. And today, we’re here to talk to you about one of the staff members that spent a lot of her time in this very room. Her name was Ella Holgerson. She was a domestic worker for Mr. Deering. She was specifically a cook. She came here from Sweden. And this was during the early 1900s, late 1800s. There were a lot of Swedish migrants that were leaving their hometown for various reasons, one of them being to find better economic opportunity. So that may have been Ella’s reason.

But what we do know was, during her stay here, she was able to meet her first husband. He worked as a chauffeur for Mr. Deering. And the reason why we bring stories like this to you is so that we can be able to connect the past to today. If you have a personal story with migration, we would love to hear from you. So we ask that you would comment on this video. And we hope that you would tune into our next one. Thank you.
