Through the Storm: Women Walking in Greatness

$15 – $20

Hued SongsIlluminArts and Vizcaya are thrilled to present a three-part series of performances amplifying the historic contributions of three influential women. Dorothy Jenkins Fields, Sandrell Rivers and Betty Mae Tiger Jumper’s work has impacted and transformed Miami and South Florida, creating change for their, and future, generations.

A teacher and librarian, Dr. Fields devoted her life to preserving the heritage of the African American community and raising awareness of African American history to a national level. She is the founder of the Black Archives, a manuscript and photographic repository for the legacies of Miami’s black community

A co-founder of the Kalimba theater company, this tireless theater and arts advocate produced more than 100 plays throughout her illustrious career. She was the president emeritus of the Diaspora Arts Coalition, a grassroots organization that serves as an arts support network in the African American community.

Betty Mae’s life is peppered with monumental achievements. She was not only the first and only female chairperson of the Seminole Tribe of South Florida. She was also the first of her tribe to read and write English as well as the first to graduate both high school and a nursing program. An accomplished journalist and editor, she co-founded her tribe’s first newspaper, the Seminole News, later known as the Seminole Tribune.

The musical performances will illuminate the intersections among the women’s lives as well as their inspirational achievements and contributions. The programs will feature sopranos Brittany Graham and The Jas Sound, and mezzo-soprano Elise Quagliata with narration by Natalia Martinez-Kalinina Rosie Gordon-Wallace.

This is a series of three plays/musical performances.

Given the short duration of each performance, and the tight schedule, we are not offering concessions for these performances. Outside food and beverage are prohibited.
