According to History.com, every American president has endorsed a specific theme for Black History Month each year since 1976.

The 2023 theme is Black Resistance explores how “African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms, especially the racial terrorism of lynching, racial pogroms, and police killings,” since the nation’s earliest days. [History.com]

In honor of this theme, Vizcaya has partnered with Miami Dade College’s Gibson Education Center, which was founded by Thelma Gibson in an act of her own resistance. Throughout the evening, guests will hear music, and spoken word and see performances in line with this theme.

As you explore the estate, you’ll be able to:

  • hear a lecture from Dr. Marvin Dunn contextualizing the contribution of Blacks in Miami.
  • listen to Vizcaya’s “A Rich and Forgotten History of Black Coconut Grove” podcast (see below for details)
  • explore first-hand accounts of Black History as shared by Coconut Grove matriarchs as a part of Vizcaya’s Black Voices series
  • chat with Vizcaya staff about broader picture of Miami, where Bahamians lived, how they created their own businesses and homes in segregated Miami, during free 15-minute informal conversations
  • watch visual artists, Brenda Presil and A.L.T. (Art Love Trap), create work on site, and hear about how it is their form of resistance
  • listen to local artist, Vanya Allen, perform her Spoken Word pieces that address resistance
  • listen to Purple Flux and their blend of Hip Hop and R&B

WHAT IS VIZCAYA LATE? It’s the low-key night out you’ve been looking for. Come explore Vizcaya as the sun sets and enjoy music on the waterfront terrace, explore the estate’s 10-acre gardens, and stroll through the Main House.
