Vizcaya Late | Pride Edition

Free – $10

Every month, we welcome the community to the estate for a low-key night out. At Vizcaya Late, we open Main House after hours for you to visit. While you’re here, take the chance to stroll the gardens with family and friends for a mid-week wind-down!

This month, listen to local jazz musicians, The French Horn Collective, on the East Terrace and make banners for our very own Pride Parade on the South Terrace. Beverages and food are available for purchase until 8:30 p.m. at the Café and Shop to enjoy by the bay or in the gardens.

  • At 6:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m., a Vizcaya Volunteer Guide will lead a 15-minute Spotlight Discussion called “Viz-gay-a” in the Entrance Loggia of the Main House.
  • At 7:45 p.m., the band will lead the parade around the gardens and back to the East Terrace.
  • There, at 8:15 p.m., local historian, Julio Capó, Jr, will give a brief LGBTQ history of Miami. Live music will carry us out until closing.

Make sure you come dressed in your Pride Parade gear, and wear comfortable shoes to join in the parade through the formal gardens!

ACTIVITIES

Local musicians from the French Horn Collective will be performing live on the East Terrace by the water throughout the evening. At 7:45 p.m. they will lead a New Orleans-style second line parade through the gardens beginning from the lower East Terrace.

On the East Terrace, after the parade, Julio Capó, Jr. will share some major flashpoints in Miami’s LGBTQ history – some known, others lesser known – that help show how far we’ve come, as well as has far we still need to go.

Julio Capó, Jr. is Associate Professor of History and Deputy Director of the Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab at Florida International University. He is the award-winning author of the book Welcome to Fairyland: Queer Miami before 1940 and curator of the Queer Miami: A History of LGBTQ Communities exhibition at HistoryMiami Museum. He serves as an associate editor of the Made by History section of The Washington Post.

Vizcaya has always been a welcoming place for people of all stripes, including people who today might be identified as LGBTQ+. Join a Vizcaya educator for a 15-minute talk in which you’ll learn about some of those figures in Vizcaya’s history and explore Vizcaya’s role in Miami’s queer community today.

Vizcaya educators will provide you with all the materials and guidance you’ll need to create your own banners to carry in the parade.

Dressing for the theme is always encouraged at Vizcaya Late and our Pride Parade is no exception! Please observe the following guidelines for attire that are always in place.

The use of shoes and clothing is required for entry. Please note that specific body parts must be covered by non-transparent fabric at all times. These include breasts, nipples, buttocks and groin areas. The use of body paint or pasties to cover these is insufficient and will be grounds for being denied access without a refund.

For those bringing props, please note that animals, pets and items that could be used as weapons are not permitted on the grounds. Any such actions will result in removal from the grounds.

Vizcaya’s Cafe will have food and drink available for purchase throughout the evening.

MORE INFORMATION

Once a month, Vizcaya offers the community a chance to enjoy the estate during extended evening hours. Visitors can explore the Main House and stroll 10 acres of waterfront gardens with family and friends for a mid-week wind-down! The theme changes each month with activities to match, so you can keep coming back for new and exciting ways to enjoy Vizcaya.

Vizcaya Late is designed for adults. Families with children are welcome to join us, but content, themes and activities may not be interesting or engaging to younger visitors. If you have questions about what families with kids might do at Vizcaya, get in touch!

Every person, regardless of age or member status, is required to have a ticket and will not be admitted without one. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are not sold at door.

Making a donation to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens does not grant entry to this program. Health and safety regulations remain in place. This program is rain or shine.

All refund requests must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on June 13, 2023.

To cancel member tickets email chris.rodriguez@vizcaya.org. All other ticket holders make refund requests on the Eventbrite sales page. No-shows and late arrivals are not eligible for a refund.
