The Kitchin: A Short Film Workshop | Set Designing II

June 10 at 12:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

Quiet on set! It’s time to make movie magic! Join us at Vizcaya Village this summer for a series of FREE workshops that cover the entire filmmaking process from start to end. Taking place every Saturday and Sunday from June 3rd through June 25, each workshop will focus on a singular aspect of stop-motion film production, from storyboarding to post-production and everything in between.

Vizcaya staff invite our community to come along as we unravel stories of our culinary artistry and food production through the power of filmmaking. Together, we will create our own masterpiece and deliver it as warm as just pulled-out-the-oven homemade bread.

You are welcome to join as many or as few workshops as you’d like, and no prior filmmaking experience is required!

THIS WORKSHOP | SET DESIGN

This workshop, on June 10, is all about set design. Artists Karla Caprali and Sophia Cabral will lead you through the brainstorming process to create sets for the short film “The Kitchin” using a variety of materials, such as repurposed cardboard, found objects, textiles, paint and other artmaking material.

REGISTER FOR FREE & CONFIRM BY email

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED TO HOLD A SEAT. WE WILL SEND A NOTICE TO CONFIRM BY EMAIL ONE WEEK IN ADVANCE. IF YOU DO NOT REPLY TO CONFIRM, YOUR REGISTRATION MAY BE SUBJECT TO CANCELLATION.

MORE ABOUT

The Kitchin is the first community-made stop-motion short animation made on the grounds of the majestic Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. A part of Vizcaya’s Contemporary Art Program (CAP). The Kitchin is the 2023 installation of community-made-and-performed art and explores the power of communal storytelling in response to the 2023-24 CAP theme “The Kitchen is the Heart of the Home.”

Vizcaya’s kitchen was once a stage for sophisticated and indulgent French delicacies. It was the perfect set for French chef Theophile (Theo) Cazes, to create elaborate masterpieces for James Deering and his guests.

In the workshops, we’ll create a narrative, make the set and the figures, film and edit. The final short film will be debuted, along with a series of behind-the-scenes videos at the culminating event on the evening of July 15, 2023.

Caprali and Cinza Lua Studios, owned by artist Karla Caprali and architecture designer Sophia Cabral, mother and daughter, join forces to present workshops on animation filmmaking and a vibrant installation exhibit with an opening for public viewing this winter at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens for this year’s CAP Contemporary Arts Project.

Baby B Strings: Led by professional violinist Belinda Niling Stohner, Baby B Strings revolutionizes the concert experience by performing in unconventional venues. Based in Miami, this quartet showcases their classical training by playing Bach and the Beatles in unique spaces. In 2013, they released their debut album featuring an original arrangement of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, premiering it at the former Miami Art Museum. They gained recognition when their performance of “Baba-Yaga” from the suite was featured live on WLRN’s Folk and Acoustic Music with Michael Stock. Notable achievements also include appearing in an internationally released HTC commercial with Robert Downey Jr. and participating in a South Florida promotional tour with MAC Cosmetics.

Oscar Fuentes: Oscar Fuentes, known as The Biscayne Poet, is a versatile artist based in Miami who has been sharing his passion for the arts for over 30 years. He is the author of eight books encompassing poetry and prose, including “Beautiful Women Will Never Know” (2013), “4 Nights With Betsy” (2014), “Vagabond: Selected Poems, Short Stories, and Plays” (2015), “Welcome Home: Poems inspired by 1Hotel South Beach” (2019), and “For the Love of Leotards” (2022). Additionally, he has released illustrated zine publications such as “Body Furnace” (2021), “The Cock Fight” (2022), and “Oscar The Clown” (2022). Recently, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava honored Oscar with the inaugural Miami-Dade Mayoral Poetry Commendation, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the county’s literary art community. Represented by Eaton Literary Agency, he adds a unique touch to his persona by using typewriter tape for a mustache.
