Nature Talks at Vizcaya with Uzi Baram

$5

Join us for the first part of Nature Talks at Vizcaya – a lecture series that continues relevant and topical conversations surrounding our special contemporary art exhibition, Wish Towers. Through this series, we hope to expand awareness of Vizcaya’s natural landscape, the effects of climate change, and Florida’s environment from the perspective of different field experts.

What Kind of Ancestors Do You Want to Be? Sea Level Rise and Heritage Sites in Florida

New weather patterns, larger storms, and rising sea levels are challenging communities and transforming conventional thinking. Archaeologists document the shifting seascape’s destruction of archaeological and historical sites and offer long-term perspectives on human adaptation and maladaptation to environmental changes. This presentation is global in scope and includes Floridian archaeological perspectives.

Featured Speaker: Uzi Baram

Uzi Baram is a Professor of Anthropology and founding Director of the Public Archaeology Lab at New College of Florida. His recent projects focus on the recovery of an early 19th-century maroon community, heritage interpretations for a county park, and building community resilience through heritage in an age of rising sea levels. His current book is Historical Archaeology of the Sunshine State.

Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with light refreshments | Talk starts promptly at 6:30 p.m.

This Florida Talks program is a partnership between Florida Humanities and Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Funding for this program was provided by Florida Humanities and sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
