Vizcaya Late | Hurricane Party

$10
Vizcaya Late Event flyer with hurricane symbol

Hurricane Andrew was a category 5 cyclone that devastated our community exactly 30 years ago on August 24, 1992. In remembrance of this historic day, we’re having a Hurricane Party!

If you’re a South Florida local, you’re likely familiar with this term. According to Eater.com, “Hurricane parties are a staple of hurricane season in Miami, New Orleans, and throughout the Gulf and Atlantic South.”

“Yet calling them “parties” does not encapsulate their complexity. In places where hurricanes are simply part of life, hurricane parties can be a deeply communal ritual inextricably bound with storm preparation. They’re seasonal fetes … more about camaraderie, food pooling, and safety in numbers.”

Vizcaya’s own Hurricane Party combines all of these crucial elements.

EAT | Food Truck Lineup

Enjoy delicious food and drink, available for purchase, from some of our local food trucks.

DANCE | Featuring DJ Hotpants

DJ Hottpants will take us back to the early 90s as he spins on the East Terrace, overlooking the bay.

PREPAREDNESS | Hands-on Workshops

Hands-on, practical application:

  • Join a member of our Horticulture team to explore the challenges of preserving Vizcaya’s living collection (i.e. gardens) in the face of inevitable rain fall, wind, and storm surge.
  • Get a taste of a day in the life of an art conservator at Vizcaya with our Collections team. You’ll work with some objects from our Teaching Collection to experience how artworks are maintained in coastal Miami’s harsh environment.
  • Hear stories from the folks who oversee construction at Vizcaya about restoration efforts from past hurricanes and what it’s like to plan resilient projects in a race against hurricane season
REMEMBERANCE | Hurricane Andrew Photo Exhibit

Take a trip down memory lane with a mini-exhibit of images from Hurricane Andrew’s impact on Vizcaya’s estate.

WHAT IS VIZCAYA LATE?

Once a month, Vizcaya offers the community a chance to enjoy the estate during extended evening hours. Visitors can explore the Main House and stroll 10 acres of waterfront gardens with family and friends for a mid-week wind-down! The theme changes each month with activities to match, so you can keep coming back for new and exciting ways to enjoy Vizcaya.

To promote inclusion for all, Vizcaya ensures that all community programs, after-hour and weekend events for locals, feature activities that are physically accessible to all visitors. While not all areas of the estate are wheelchair accessible, community programs are purposefully located in areas without stairs or that can be accessed via a ramp.
