Teacher Workshop: Urban Farming at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
Thursday, September 21, 2017
8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
During this 6-hour workshop, K-12 grade educators will learn how to plan, design, budget, create and maintain an urban farming garden in their school, how to integrate it as a teaching and learning tool into the existing state-standards-based curriculum, and how to utilize it as an outdoor classroom. This workshop will use Vizcaya’s agricultural history as a springboard to discuss several topics, such as sustainability, systems-thinking, environmental stewardship and awareness. Teachers will learn to use Vizcaya’s agricultural legacy as a starting point to introduce the project into their classrooms after the workshop. Complimentary bus transportation and museum admission for up to 35 students are awarded to each participant upon completion of the workshop for an Urban Farming Student Workshop at Vizcaya. The workshop is for teachers working with K- through 12th-grade students. The workshop is $20 per person, limited to 10 participants, and includes breakfast, lunch and all materials. Friday, April 20, 2018
8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Archival resources and collections are essential for historic homes and museums for preservation, education and community engagement purposes. Participants will dive deep into reading, creative writing skills, art, and creativity to create a collaborative book featuring Vizcaya’s archival material. Each educator will take back to school a package of digital resources to bring the activity to their classrooms. Educators that submit a class booklet by the end of the school year that is inspired on Vizcaya’s digital archival resources will be eligible for complimentary bus transportation and museum admission for up to 35 students the following school year. The workshop is for teachers working with K- through 12th-grade students. The workshop is $20 per person, limited to 25 participants, and includes breakfast, lunch and all materials.
